Lampshade Process...

It all starts with card-stock templates to trace onto the glass for cutting

After all of the glass cutting for the lampshade is completed, the scraps are used to create the matching coasters. The pieces are mounted on plastic adhesive film, placed in a plastic mold and then mortar is poured in.

Once the mortar has cured, the coasters are popped out of the mold, cleaned up and then have a cork base applied.

All of the pieces of glass are ground for a good fit in the jig. They then have a copper foil applied around their edges and are soldered.

Once the four individual panels are completed, they are joined as two pairs and then all four are soldered together. The mounting hardware (known as a spider) is then soldered in place. Construction is now completed. The piece is then thoroughly cleaned, the solder has a patina applied to make it a dark brown colour and then wax is applied to protect the solder from moisture. The finished piece is shown below. Note how when the glass is backlit with a bulb, the glass colour changes from a blue/violet to more of a red/violet.
